Assurance of Salvation

You really can know for sure!

Do you ever struggle with doubts about your salvation?
I am convinced that this is a common struggle for many Christians, myself included ... though we usually don't like to admit it! It's easy to get sidetracked by a misplaced dependency upon our feelings and/or our imperfect performance. If you're struggling with this issue, listen friend, you don't have to remain stuck in the rut! Please allow me to share some important insights I've learned through the years that have helped me to walk by faith in the assurance of my salvation.

If you're like me, doubts of salvation usually center around our performance. Satan loves to accuse us when we don't measure up to the high calling we've received. But take heart, my friend, salvation is not based upon our performance.

When we begin to doubt, the first thing we need to do is renew our minds on truth that can set us free (Rom. 12:1-2, John 8:31-32). And that begins by focusing on Jesus instead of ourselves. Seems to me, whenever I shift my focus onto Jesus' finished work on my behalf, all my doubts subside.

Recently, I heard some wonderful insight on this topic from an excellent preacher - the late Adrian Rogers. Here's a synopsis of Adrian's key points:

Assurance of salvation involves 3 witnesses!

1. The witness of the cross ... Jesus paid your sin-debt. It is finished!

2. The witness of the Holy Spirit ... telling our spirit that we belong to Him whereby we cry out "Abba, Father!"

3. The witness of the Word of God ... God's own testimony about the matter!

1 John 5:11-14
11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

So, dear friend...

Have you placed your complete trust in Jesus' death, burial and resurrection as your only source of forgiveness and eternal life? If so, you can rest assured that you belong to Him!

Knowing is not based on feelings! Our feelings often betray us. Trust God instead of your feelings. It's amazing how our feelings tend to fall into proper alignment when our mind is on Him.

Focus on Jesus instead of yourself ... a preoccupation with Jesus is the best remedy for a preoccupation with self.

So instead of allowing the enemy to discourage you with doubt and fear, let your mind be renewed with truth. His perfect love casts out all fear (1John 4:18). Choose to walk by faith in the above facts and enjoy the joy of your salvation today!
